{"id":1053,"date":"2019-05-28T22:07:46","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T21:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/?p=1053"},"modified":"2019-05-28T22:07:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T21:07:46","slug":"eu-students-will-not-face-brexit-penalty-next-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/2019\/05\/28\/eu-students-will-not-face-brexit-penalty-next-year\/","title":{"rendered":"EU students will not face Brexit penalty next year."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EU students going to English universities next year will be eligible for domestic tuition fees and student loans for the duration of their course regardless of <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/eu-referendum\">Brexit<\/a>, the Department for Education (DfE) has announced.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Skidmore, the universities minister, told a meeting of ministers in Brussels that EU students would continue to be funded on the same basis as students in England for undergraduate and postgraduate courses starting in the 2020-21 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that students will be considering their university options for next year already, which is why we are confirming now that eligible EU nationals will continue to benefit from home fee status and can access financial support for the 2020-21 academic year, so they have the certainty they need to make their choice,\u201d Skidmore said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item rich-link--pillar-news\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/1104d510d664a07c9b3fb1092c21672b21ac9380\/412_329_2779_1668\/master\/2779.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=e9351e9fe02b0dcaf43c7fddb7a680a5\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<h2 class=\"rich-link__title\"><a class=\"rich-link__link\">Visa extension to boost numbers of overseas students in UK after Brexit.<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"rich-link__title\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">The announcement was welcomed by university leaders, although it has been widely expected since the decision to delay the UK\u2019s EU departure date until the end of October. The Scottish government said in April that EU students applying for courses there next year would be eligible for home student status.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Applications for undergraduate places at Oxbridge and medical schools close in October, leading to uncertainty for potential EU applicants. International student fees in England can be \u00a315,000 a year higher than annual home student fees.<\/p>\n<p>The decision means EU students will be eligible for student loans on tuition fees of \u00a39,250 a year for undergraduate courses in England. EU nationals who have lived for five years in the UK are also eligible for maintenance loans.<\/p>\n<p>Jess Cole, the director of policy for the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, said Skidmore\u2019s announcement was critical to clarify the fee status for tens of thousands of EU students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo reassure these students further, the government should guarantee their migration rights for the duration of their studies. <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/students\">Students<\/a> starting courses in 2020-21 should be eligible for the EU settlement scheme regardless of whether the UK leaves the EU without a deal,\u201d Cole said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents from across the EU enrich campus life and bring benefits to all regions of the UK, making a positive impact on our economy.
