It was destroyed by a major fire in 1184 but subsequently rebuilt and by the 14th century was one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England. The abbey controlled large tracts of surrounding land and was instrumental in major drainage projects on the <a title=\"Somerset Levels\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Somerset_Levels\">Somerset Levels<\/a>. The abbey was suppressed during the <a title=\"Dissolution of the Monasteries\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries\">Dissolution of the Monasteries<\/a> under King\u00a0<a title=\"Henry VIII of England\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_VIII_of_England\">Henry VIII of England<\/a>. The last abbot, <a title=\"Richard Whiting (abbot)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Whiting_(abbot)\">Richard Whiting<\/a> (Whyting), was <a title=\"Hanged, drawn and quartered\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanged,_drawn_and_quartered\">hanged, drawn and quartered<\/a> as a traitor on <a title=\"Glastonbury Tor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glastonbury_Tor\">Glastonbury Tor<\/a> in 1539.<\/p>\n<p>From at least the 12th century the Glastonbury area has been associated with the legend of <a title=\"King Arthur\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_Arthur\">King Arthur<\/a>, a connection promoted by medieval monks who asserted that Glastonbury was <a title=\"Avalon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avalon\">Avalon<\/a>. Christian legends have claimed that the abbey was founded by <a title=\"Joseph of Arimathea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_of_Arimathea\">Joseph of Arimathea<\/a> in the 1st century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/2016\/04\/07\/king-arthurs-tomb-in-somerset\/1-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-600\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-600\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/files\/2016\/04\/1-1-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/files\/2016\/04\/1-1-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/files\/2016\/04\/1-1-768x570.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.smbosque.es\/sargento\/files\/2016\/04\/1-1-1024x761.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1184, a great fire at Glastonbury destroyed the monastic buildings.\u00a0Reconstruction began almost immediately and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Lady Chapel (Glastonbury)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_Chapel_(Glastonbury)\">Lady Chapel<\/a>, which includes the well, was consecrated in 1186.\u00a0There is evidence that, in the 12th century, the ruined nave was renovated enough for services while the great new church was being constructed. Parts of the walls of the aisle and crossing having been completed by 1189, progress then continued more slowly.<sup id=\"cite_ref-31\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glastonbury_Abbey#cite_note-31\">[31]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Pilgrim visits had fallen and in 1191 the alleged discovery of King Arthur and Queen <a title=\"Guinevere\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guinevere\">Guinevere<\/a>&#8216;s tomb in the <a title=\"Cemetery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cemetery\">cemetery<\/a> provided fresh impetus for visiting Glastonbury. A contemporaneous, though not an eyewitness account was given by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Giraldus Cambrensis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giraldus_Cambrensis\">Giraldus Cambrensis<\/a> in his <i>De principis instructione<\/i> (\u00abInstruction of a Prince,\u00bb ca. 1193) and recollected in his <i>Speculum Ecclesiae<\/i>, ca. 1216 according to which the abbot, <a title=\"Henry de Sully\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_de_Sully\">Henry de Sully<\/a>, commissioned a search, discovering at the depth of 16 feet (5\u00a0m) a massive hollowed oak trunk containing two skeletons.
